The Center for Limnology (CFL) is a global leader in freshwater science. We conduct research across Wisconsin and the world to better understand human impact on aquatic environments, find solutions to important problems, and help preserve our invaluable freshwater resources. We also foster the next generation of aquatic scientists by offering field-based, hands-on research and training for undergraduate students.
How Your Gifts Make an Impact
Your donation is an investment in the next generation of freshwater scientists.
For 2025, all Day of the Badger gifts will go directly into our Student Support Fund and be used to hire summer research fellows at both Hasler Lab in Madison and Trout Lake Station in northern Wisconsin. Summer research fellowships give undergraduate students at UW–Madison and across the country an unparalleled experience in collecting data, doing research, and communicating their science to the public.
Summer research fellows go on to careers in all aspects of the freshwater sciences — from doing fieldwork for environmental engineering firms and state agencies, to running their own research programs at universities and nonprofit organizations.
Why We Need Your Support
Fresh water is Earth’s most vital resource, and the next generation of scientists will play a leading role in helping us protect and conserve it. Your support during Day of the Badger will provide up to four undergraduate students with the career-defining gift of summer field experience at one of our two Wisconsin labs. Each fellowship costs the CFL $7,200, and we are working toward a total goal of $28,800 — or four life-changing fellowships.
“This was my first time doing research, [and] it was just amazing. I always knew I wanted to do something with water but just didn’t know what. Now I know I want people to have clean, available water. That’s what my passion is.” — Zoe Stansbury, environmental engineering major, UW–Madison
The summer research fellowship “allows you to collaborate with people from many different backgrounds and ideas, expanding your science beyond anything you would have dreamed of. It’s the perfect place to explore different scientific careers.” — Mason Polencheck, zoology and microbiology double major, UW–Madison
