The youth of today are our future leaders in genomic research and innovations, bringing the best and brightest ideas to genomic applications in medicine, agriculture, and other areas that benefit Wisconsin and beyond. Your generous gift can help make this happen by supporting the Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) in Genomic Data Science.
The Genomic Data Science SROP, hosted by the UW-Madison Center for Genomic Science Innovation (CGSI), provides an exciting summer-long experience in genome science to undergraduates from across the country. Students work with faculty mentors and research labs to tackle important problems in genomics, from developing new methods for predicting disease-causing changes in a person’s DNA to applying novel approaches in analyzing large genomic datasets to understand biology. A key goal is to make the program accessible to all students, including students from historically underrepresented groups and first-generation college students.
Students in this 10-week program learn skills in programming, machine learning, and data science analysis, apply those skills to important research problems, and gain valuable experience working in a research setting. In addition to mentored research, students participate in a broad range of career development activities, learn about graduate school and how to apply, and bond through social activities. Together, these experiences build a strong community that empowers students for their future trajectories.
The cost of the program is roughly $11,000 per student. Any sized gift makes a difference. Donors contributing $500 or more will have the opportunity to meet with students during their summer experience.
Your generous gift will support summer students in our program by providing:
- Travel costs to and from Madison, WI
- Student food and housing near campus
- Student stipend
