Spanish & Portuguese

The UW–Madison Department of Spanish and Portuguese has long been an internationally recognized program and is currently one of the largest language departments in the country. Our diverse teaching staff provides outstanding language instruction and advanced knowledge of the cultures and language systems of the world’s more than 700 million speakers of Spanish and Portuguese. We attract graduate students from all parts of the U.S. and from three other continents, and our faculty produces abundant and superb research, as recognized by recent fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the American Council of Learned Societies.
